Director Statement

The short-form series THE ARTIST’S WAY OUT (AWO) is something I wrote for the two actors starring in it, both of whom I love dearly. I was needing uplifting when put it together, and so I made something that in the moment felt fresh and entertaining. I believe there is something for everyone in this intimate story of 2 people isolated together.

I was also wanting to see BIPOC characters on screen in the Canadian winter! Although the series raises issues of cultural and sexual identity, they are simply a part of who the characters are, as they experience the ins and outs of a new relationship in close quarters, and of trying to be artists.

Another challenge was to shoot this series in six, 9-hour days with one camera. I was nursing a 1 year old at the time and wanted to see if we could make a set with livable working hours. We made our days and finished all six episodes for around 5K per episode, thanks to an abundance of community support!!

Featuring music from all local Toronto musicians.
